Sergio Vilela

... born in 1983, got his first university degree in Chemistry at University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro (UTAD), Portugal, in 2007. Two years later, in 2009, he concluded his Masters in Laboratory Analysis, also at UTAD, in collaboration with the University of Aveiro. Currently, he is attending the PhD program in Chemistry under the supervision of Filipe Almeida Paz and João Tomé at the Center for Research in Ceramics and Composite Materials (CICECO). His scientific interests are focused at the design, synthesis and characterization of functional metal–organic frameworks.

Sandrina Silva

... has completed her PhD in 2009 at University of Orléans (France) and University of Lisbon (Portugal) about carbohydrate based 1,3-oxazoline-2-thiones as original antimicrobial and insecticidal devices. Then she moved to Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule Zürich (ETH) in Switzerland where she worked on the synthesis of paromomycin derived aminoglucosidases antibiotics. She join the University of Aveiro on 2010 and her recent activity concerns the synthesis of water soluble photosensitizers and their application in photodynamic therapy.

Bing Liu

... was born in Yiyang, Hunan, China in 1975. He was awarded his Ph. D from Fujian Institute of Research on the Structure of matter, Chinese Academy of Science in 2005 (supervisor Professor Guo-Cong Guo). He worked in College of Science, Northeast Forestry University in China from 2006-2010. Currently, Bing Liu is a Post-doctor supervised by Dr. João Tomé and Dr. Filipe Paz, at University of Aveiro, and Dr. Luis Cunha at University of Porto. His research interest focuses on the design, crystal engineering and properties of MOFs concerning with 1,2,4-triazole. Bing Liu led/participated 7 research projects, and has authored or co-authored 56 research publications, and 8 poster communications.

Research Fellowships

Leandro Lourenço

... was born in Puerto Cabello, Venezuela, in 1984. He got his first university degree in Industrial Chemistry at Faculty of Sciences and Technology of University of Coimbra (FCTUC), Coimbra, in 2007. One year later he concluded his Masters in Chemistry at University of Coimbra, supervised by Prof. Rocha Gonsalves. He is interested in the synthesis of porphyrins, phthalocyanines and their dyads to functionalize supramolecularly with graphene, carbon nanotubes or fullerenes. The novel exciting nanomaterials can be used in a wide range of applications due to their unique physical, chemical, thermal, and mechanical properties.
