João Paulo C. Tomé 

….is an Associate Professor at the Instituto Superior Técnico, Senior Researcher at Centro de Química Estrutural and Associated to QOPNA research unit and UGent. He is graduated in chemistry from the University of Aveiro, from where he also received his Ph.D. in 2001 working on porphyrin chemistry with Prof. Cavaleiro. His current research interests include the synthesis of porphyrins and phthalocyanines with appropriate molecular properties mainly for: photomedicine, photoinduced energy- and electronic-transfer materials, optical (chemo)sensors and (photo)catalysis. For that, he has been establishing an international network with several colleagues in these fields, maintaining a strong, independent and funded research program. He has published over 130 original and review papers, 4 book chapters and issued 3 patents. Already delivered 36 invited oral communications and 44 others, several advanced/summer curses in different countries, and has been co-author of more than 220 poster communications in several national and international scientific meetings.

José A. González-Delgado

… was born in Huelva (Spain) in 1986 and he graduated in Chemistry in 2009 at the University of Huelva. He received his Ph.D. degree in 2014 under the supervision of Prof. A. F. Barrero, Prof. M. M Herrador del Pino and Dr. J. F. Arteaga at the University of Granada (Spain). He is currently a Marie Curie post-doctoral fellow at Inovapotek, Pharmaceutical Research & Development, Lda (Porto, Portugal) under supervision of Prof. Bruno Sarmento, MsC. Marta Ferreira and Prof. João P. C. Tomé working on the polymeric nanoencapsulation of photosensitizers and their formulation into semi-solid systems (gels and creams) for photodynamic inactivation of microorganisms.

Catarina Ramos

… received her Ph.D., in the Chemistry field, in 2012, from the University of Aveiro (Portugal), working on the study of non-covalent interactions of neutral and cationic porphyrins with nucleic acids, under the supervision of Prof. Maria Graça Santana-Marques and Professor Doctor José António Ferrer-Correia. Her current research interest concerns the study of multicharged porphyrins and phthalocyanines as potential telomerase inhibitors, using mass spectrometry. She has authored/co-authored 16 research publications, 5 oral presentations and over 20 poster communications.

Venkatramaiah Nutalapati

... was born in Chandalur, Andhra Pradesh, India in 1982. He received Ph.D., degree in chemistry in 2011 from Pondicherry University, India.  During     Ph.D., under the supervision of Prof. R.Venkatesan, he worked on porphyrin based hybrid functional materials towards the detection of Toxic gases and tunable band pass filters. He obtained Master´s degree in Analytical Chemistry from Acharya Nagarjuna University in 2004.  Currently, he is a Postdoctoral fellow supervised by Dr. João Tomé and Dr. Filipe Paz at University of Aveiro. His current research interest on “Porphyrin/phthalocyanine based metal-organic frameworks: synthesis and catalytic behaviour in photooxidation reactions”.  Venkatramaiah Nutalapati has authored or co-authored 27 research publications, 2 patents and 6 poster communications.

Flávio Figueira

... was born in Câmara de Lobos, Madeira, Portugal in 1982. He received a degree in chemistry in 2006 from the University of Lisbon, Science Faculty (FCUL).  During this time a stage in Lille, France (ESNL) under the supervision of Doctor Francine Agbossou, was performed in Homogeneous Catalysis. He obtained a Master´s degree in Inorganic and Biomedical Chemistry also from the same University in 2008 (supervisor Doctor João Galamba). Currently, Flávio Figueira is a PhD student supervised by Dr. João Tomé and Professor José Cavaleiro, at University of Aveiro. His interests rest on porphyrinoid chemistry, synthesis, characterization and their potential application in biomedicine, catalisys and supramolecular chemistry. Flávio Figueira has authored or coauthored 8 research publications, 16 poster communications and 5 oral communications.

João Rodrigues

... born in Albergaria-a-Velha in 1983. He got his first university degree in Industrial Chemistry at Faculty of Sciences and Technology of University of Coimbra (FCTUC), in 2007. In 2009 he starts his Master degree in Organic Chemistry at University of Aveiro (UA) who concluded in 2010. He received his Ph.D. in Chemistry in 2015, also from University of Aveiro, working on synthesis, characterization and anion binding studies of new anion binding sensors, under the supervision of Doctor João Tomé and Professor José Cavaleiro. His mainly research interest is chemistry, in particular on organic, materials and supramolecular chemistry.
Currently, João is a Postdoctoral fellow supervised by Doctor João Tomé and Doctor Filipe Paz at Center for Research in Ceramics and Composite Materials (CICECO). His present activity concerns the synthesis and characterization of functional metal–organic frameworks (MOFs).

Clara Gomes

... born in Mortágua in 1986. She completed her first degree in Biology at Aveiro University, in 2009. In 2010 she obtained her Master degree in Applied Biology, specialization in Clinical and Environmental Microbiology, in collaboration with the Organic Group of Chemistry department in Aveiro University. Since 2011 she is attending a research grant with supervision of João Paulo Tomé and Tito Trindade at the Química Orgânica, Produtos Naturais e Agro-alimentares (QOPNA) and Center for Research in Ceramics and Composite Materials (CICECO). Her scientific interests are focused in synthesis and phisico-chemical studies of porphyrins derivatives and organic/inorganic hybrids materials. Application of these compounds against microbial pathogens and oxidative stress.

Patricia Pereira

... was born in Amarante (Portugal) in 1989. As an undergraduate in the research groups of Professor Graça Neves and Professor Graça Marques at University of Aveiro, Portugal, she became passionate about research in medicinal chemistry. In 2010, she had the opportunity to join the groups of Doctor João Tomé at University of Aveiro (Porphyrins and Phthalocyanines Materials Research Group in Department of Chemistry) and Doctor Rosa Fernandes of the Faculty of Medicine-University of Coimbra (Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics Department in IBILI) to develop her master’s thesis. Since 2013, she is developing her PhD thesis (financed by FCT, Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia) under the supervision of Doctor João Tomé and Doctor Rosa Fernandes - “Design of novel Galacto-Dendritic-Photosensitizers: selectively targeting and killing cancer cells”. In 2016, she joined the group of Professor Charles Michael Drain at Hunter College of the City University of New York (USA) as a PhD visiting student. She is interested on the synthesis of third generation photosensitizers and their in vitro and in vivo validation for photodynamic therapy of cancer. Patrícia Pereira has authored or coauthored 12 research publications, more than 30 poster communications and 10 oral communications in national and international scientific meetings

Wioleta Borzęcka...

was received a Master degree in Chemistry in 2011 from the University of Silesia, Poland. Her thesis aimed synthesis and study of the coordination properties of derivatives and analogues of 8-hydroxyquinoline as a two-photon absorbing (2-PA) chromophores (under the supervision of Prof. Daniel Gryko and Prof. Jarosław Polański). Following the completion of her Master thesis, she started research work in Prof. Vicente Gotor’s group at the University of Oviedo, Spain in the field of biocatalysis. From 2013 she is a PhD student at the University of Aveiro and the Autonoma University of Madrid. Her current study is focused on the synthesis of novel photosensitizer-silica nanoparticle hybrids for controlled 1O2 and/or photosensitizer release (directed by Dr. Joao Tome, Prof. Tito Trindade and Prof. Tomas Torres).

Lucia Fernandez...

...Lucía Fernández was born in Pontevedra, Spain, in 1985. She received her master's degree in Chemistry in 2010 from University of Santiago de Compostela, with both specialties in Structural Chemistry and Chemistry of Bioactive Compounds. She developed her degree's final project in the synthesis of silver nanoparticles in the presence of poly (vinylpirrolidone), under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Manuel Arturo López Quintela. During 2011 and 2012, she worked as technologist assistant at the Repsol Technology Center, in Spain, in projects aimed at the recovery of valuable products and the reduction of the environmental impact of petrochemical sites. Currently, she develops her Ph. D. work in the field of biotechnology, supervised by Dr. João Tomé, Dr. Ângela Cunha and Dr. Valdemar Esteves. Her current scientific activity is focused on the degradation of 17β-estradiol, a persistent pollutant in environmental waters, by phototreatment and biological approaches.

Mafalda Bispo

…finished her Biochemistry bachelor in 2013 at University of Aveiro in Portugal. In the 3rd year of her bachelor she started working with Photodynamic Therapy for the treatment of bladder cancer. After this, she continued her Master studies at University of Aveiro in ‘Clinical Biochemistry’ which she finished in October 2014. For her master thesis research she continued working on the topic of PDT for bladder cancer treatment at UAM with the Erasmus program (4 months) under the supervision of Prof. T. Tomas also working with Dr. J. Tomé and Dr. Rosa Fernandes at UA and IBILI in the Medical University of Coimbra respectively. Recently she joined BAM for one year under this Marie Curie program for the synthesis of an immunoconjugate for Age-related Macular Degeneration Treatment with PDT.

José Carlos Ribeiro Ferreira Pereira

…was born in Paços de Ferreira in 1992. He completed his first degree in Biology at the Faculty of Sciences at Porto University in 2014. Since 2014 he is doing his Master’s in Molecular and Cellular Biology at Aveiro’s University, being his master’s thesis a collaboration between João Tomé (UA) and Rosa Fernandes (FMUC). His scientific interest is new therapeutic approaches to cancer treatment and the study of third generation photosensitizers to target and kill cancer cells as they alterations in the cytoskeleton.
